My husband and I always create a list of the top three things we want to do on vacation. My number one was the Dolphin Encounter in Cabo San Lucas. The thought of three generations of my family being able to touch, kiss and dance with these beautiful and intelligent creatures was a memory I just had to create.
The Cabo Dolphins structure is sleek and modern. My three year old son was so excited, but then again we all were! When you go in, you are greeted and quickly brought through the line. You are escorted back to some lockers/changing rooms and then you wait for your dolphin trainer. Lucia took us to the staging area, told us a little bit about the dolphins, then it was time!!!
We went into the submerged platform area, and they asked us to sit down in the water. I was impressed with their thoughtfulness as they offered my Mom (she’s a young 85) a chair and then we got our first real glimpse of our dolphin Lulu.
What a magnificent animal. So animated, so filled with life and happiness. We were able to pet, kiss, and splash with Lulu. She was surprisingly soft. I guess I had thought it was going to be more of a rough texture, but instead it was smooth, and felt like soft rubber kids toy. A part of me was expecting my son to be scared of the dolphin, but instead he wanted to follow the dolphin in to the deep end and swim with her, even though he can’t swim.
When they asked who wanted to dance with the dolphin, I’ll admit, my hand shot up first. Oh. My. Goodness I was so happy. Even now, thinking back on that dance, I can’t wipe the smile off my face. So wonderful. My son is still talking about the dolphins.
